Now Laurie Tarkan writes that as eyes age, less and less sunlight gets through the lens to reach key cells in the retina that regulate the body’s circadian rhythm, its internal clock that rallies the body to tackle the day’s demands in the morning and slows it down at night, allowing the body to rest and repair. ‘Evolution has built this beautiful timekeeping mechanism, but the clock is not absolutely perfect and needs to be nudged every day,’ says Dr. David Berson, whose lab at Brown University studies how the eye communicates with the brain. Dr. Patricia Turner, an ophthalmologist who with her husband, Dr. Martin Mainster has written extensively about the effects of the aging eye on health, estimate that by age 45, the photoreceptors of the average adult receive just 50 percent of the light needed to fully stimulate the circadian system, by age 55, it dips to 37 percent, and by age 75, to a mere 17 percent and recommend that people should make an effort to expose themselves to bright sunlight or bright indoor lighting when they cannot get outdoors and have installed skylights and extra fluorescent lights in their own offices to help offset the aging of their own eyes. ‘In modern society, most of the time we live in a controlled environment under artificial lights, which are 1,000 to 10,000 times dimmer than sunlight and the wrong part of the spectrum,’ says Turner. ‘We believe the effect is huge and that it’s just beginning to be recognized as a problem.’”

Instead, the Ubuntu for Android system runs both OSes side by side, picking which to surface depending on the form factor. When a device — in the demo, it was a Motorola Atrix — is being used as a smartphone, it uses Android. When it’s docked into a laptop or desktop setup, the full version of Ubuntu is used. This would make sense for several reasons. For starters, if Apple were to return to the old summer schedule, this would give iPhone 4S buyers less than a year before a new model arrives. Many would buy it anyway, but it could lead to some frustration with Apple. Additionally, the Fall slot was, for years, devoted to the iPod.

Everything on Meizu MX is looking great! The display is beautiful, the color is sharp, comes in a good size. In comparison to its predecessor M9, MX is bigger and slimmer. A fraudulent version of the Game Boy Color classic Pokemon Yellow has somehow made it through Apple’s approval gauntlet and wound up on the App Store. Published by “Home of Anime” with Daniel Burford listed as the author, the “game” runs for $0.99 and has a one-and-a-half star rating after 1,352 reviews. According to said reviews, the app crashes after the title screen and cannot actually be played.

As if the simple existence of a Pokemon game on the App Store weren’t enough of a red flag, the listing’s screenshots aren’t even from Pokemon Yellow, they’re actually from Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green. The app’s description also contains unattributed “press quotes” and a statement that “all trademarks and copyrights are owned by their respective owners,” because everyone knows that admitting your copyright infringement absolves you of all responsibility, right? We’ve reached out to Apple for comment.

Editor’s Note: My faulty, old-man brain confused the fact that Pokemon Yellow launched with a Poke-themed Game Boy Color, with it actually being a Game Boy Color game (which it was not). I’ve exploded an Electrode in penance.

“Our destinies and inspirations are shaped by lies, myths and fables.” So reads a manuscript page hidden in Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, explaining humanity’s love of a good story. It states that our favorite fictional characters are dearer to us than the real people we pass on the street every day.

It’s hard to deny the truth of it. We admire our favorite characters, dream of them, of playing a part in their story. That was the power of the original Alan Wake. It swept players up in its characters and their story, inviting us to help craft it and see it through to the end. American Nightmare attempts to recapture the same magic, flipping the script for something less horror and more sci-fi camp, though the end result is somewhat less elegant.

Finally, we have a concrete reason for the eternal delay of Half-Life 2 Episode 3: Valve head Gabe Newell is more interested in wearable computing. OK, that’s not directly why Valve hasn’t announced a new Half-Life title, but wearable computing and hardware development are definitely something Valve is interested in, Newell told Penny Arcade Report.

Wearable computers — think Star Trek communication badges, wrist-bound touchscreens or SixthSense — are seeing a resurgence, and Valve is doing its own research into how they might function as gaming devices. Wearable computers now are “way higher resolution, way lighter weight, much better battery life,” and Valve is doing its own research into this technology through biometrics, and is excited to see where it goes, Newell said.

“So we’re thinking of trying to figure out how to do the equivalent of the [Team Fortress] incremental approach in software design and try to figure out how would you get something similar to that in the hardware space as well,” he said. If Valve were to produce hardware, it would be something easy to iterate so customers don’t have to buy 10 million devices, Newell said. Of course, that’s if.

“Well, if we have to sell hardware we will,” Newell said. “We have no reason to believe we’re any good at it; it’s more we think that we need to continue to have innovation and if the only way to get these kind of projects started is by us going and developing and selling the hardware directly then that’s what we’ll do.”

No company is safe from irrelevance, as far as Newell sees it, and even Microsoft and Sony can suffer the same fate as Atari and Commodore if they continue to create closed systems and don’t innovate. “As soon as Valve stops doing interesting, innovative work we’re gonna be left behind,” Newell stated, unfortunately missing the “left for dead” pun opportunity.

Alan Wake for PC took the road less traveled to launch, but all those yellow bricks are made of gold from here on out. Developer Remedy, which was also the publisher of the PC version, revealed the game recouped its development and marketing expenses during “the first 48 hours” after launch on February 16.

Over time, the hellish nature of the PlayStation Vita launch game reveals itself. You do the same tasks over and over again, fighting the same enemies with the same strategies. You see the same artwork after every stage. You’re forced to listen to the same metal songs over and over again, sometimes for 20 minutes at a time. What was originally enjoyable becomes a grueling trial in its repetition, much like in that classic work of literature, Treehouse of Horror IV.

While we’re a bit shocked that portions of the Skyrim map are behind a paywall in an app that is nothing but maps of that one game, we must concede the point that Skyrim is irresponsibly huge.

Back in the summer of 2010, a tantalizing prospect came up: Seaman on the 3DS. It was teased by Yoot Saito, the creator of the Dreamcast original, and since then we’ve been all about it. We’ve been so about it.

According to a report from Japanese news outlet Nikkei Inc. (via Andriasang), Seaman is the first of many rival-published games Nintendo is aiming to bring to the 3DS. The report mentions Seaman as an example of the types of games Nintendo is looking to revive on the 3DS, yet sadly offers no further detail on the impending update.

Saito, along with three other notable Japanese developers, is working on a special 3DS project for Level-5 called Guild 01. Saito will design one game, to be included with the other three from Suda 51, Yasumi Matsuno and Yoshiyuki Hirai.
