Transparency Grenade Collects and Leaks Sensitive Data
Feb 21st
Zothecula writes “If you thought WikiLeaks was a disruptive idea, the transparency grenade is going to blow you away. This tiny bit of hardware hidden under the shell shaped like a classic Soviet F1 hand grenade allows you to leak information from anywhere just by pulling a pin. The device is essentially a small computer with a powerful wireless antenna and a microphone. Following ‘detonation,’ the grenade intercepts local network traffic and captures audio data, then makes the information immediately available online.”

Picture Blocking Beer Cooler Keeps Your Face Out of Embarrassing Photos
Dec 16th
cylonlover writes “It may sound like something dreamed up by a cheesy men’s magazine as a joke, but apparently this is a real thing that actually exists. Ostensibly, the Norte Photoblocker is a functional beer cooler surrounded by four sensors that can detect the flashes from cameras or cell phones. If a flash goes off in the direction of the Photoblocker, it fires its own flash to flood the resulting photos with bright white and obscure anyone nearby. Now you can go about your usual business of cheating on your spouse, being an idiot around your boss, or drunkenly harassing fellow party-goers without worrying that some wildly irresponsible person will tag you in a photo and posts it online.”

Google+ and Goggles apps for Android updated with new features
Dec 10th
It’s time to stop ignoring that “updates available” notification and start enjoying some refreshed Google goodies on Android. You’ll now be able to search posts and people from within the Google+ app, as well as add your +1 to photos and comments, see the ‘online’ and ‘typing’ status of your Messenger buddies, and upload videos and full-res photos. Meanwhile, Goggles now has a ‘continuous mode’ that can log multiple items without you having to fiddle with the shutter button, the ability to link straight to any online versions of hard-copy text, and also better crowdsourcing so users can add less well-known objects like toothpaste squeezers and Off the Hook shower heads to Google’s ever-expanding database.

Q? Entertainment reveals Ninety-Nine Nights Online
Dec 8th
It’s been a busy year for games, but something is missing. Batman, Assasssin’s Creed, Skyrim, sure, those are all great, but what about Ninety-Nine Nights? Q? Entertainment has got you covered, unveiling the 2D PC action MMO we’ve all been dying to play. Ninety-Nine Nights Online is being developed by UserJoy Technology, and the trailer reveals that it contains both hacking and slashing.
We’d say this one probably won’t see a release outside Asia. If you feel like braving lots of Japanese text, however, Siliconera reports that you can sign up for a preview version over at the official site.

Halfbrick Opens Up An Official Online Store Of Fruit Ninja Merchandise, Including Some Brand New Plushies
Dec 7th
Fruit Ninja, created by Halfbrick Studios, has continued to be a hit on iOS and other mobile platforms. The game has become so popular, we’ve already seen t-shirt offerings appear. Even so, the fruit slicing craze is still expanding. Partnering with ToyFoundry, an Internet-based brand merchandise company, Halfbrick has opened up an official online merchandise store, and the first items are adorable Fruit Ninja plush toys.
“With Fruit Ninja’s universal success, this partnership just developed naturally,” said Phil Larsen, chief marketing officer at Halfbrick. “Our fans are crazy about Fruit Ninja and this is a really fun and charming way to extend the brand outside of games.”
So, what kind of plushies can you get your hands on? As of now, a cuddly version of Sensei is the only one ready to be immediately shipped to your doorstep. However, a cheerful watermelon is available for pre-order. The scheduled shipping date for “Watermelon” is mid-January of next year.
As you can see in the photos above, Sensei is giving a smile and a kind waive whereas Watermelon can be set so that he smiles back at you or left in the fully sliced position. Both are made from “100% all new polyester materials and stuffing.” Unfortunately, we do not have details on physical dimensions nor what exactly the “Fruit Ninja Magic Tag” is but we’ll keep you informed as details are provided.
Sensei is available to purchase for $15.99 and Watermelon is available to pre-order for $14.99 plus shipping charges. The Training Pack, a set of the two, is provided as a convenience and at a tiny savings for anyone who desires both.

Canada To Adopt On-Line Voting?
Aug 18th
belmolis writes “Here in Canada we have an old-fashioned paper ballot voting system that by all accounts works very well. We get results quickly and without fraud. Nonetheless, Elections Canada wants to test on-line voting. From the article: ‘The head of the agency in charge of federal elections says it’s time to modernize Canada’s elections, including testing online voting and ending a ban on publishing early election results.’ Is it worth trying to fix a system that isn’t broken?”

MetroPCS partners with Rhapsody to offer unlimited music in its rate plans
Aug 17th

Now this is our idea of innovative competition. MetroPCS is partnering with Rhapsody to add another “unlimited” to its all-you-can-eat plan: music. Rather than being charged a monthly subscription charge to receive access to the service’s massive catalog of 12 million tunes, customers will get the same service — that’s playing, streaming, and even downloading tracks — without any additional charge on their monthly plan. So far, the service is only available for the carrier’s Android lineup, so head on over to the Market to download the app. Before you begin downloading music left and right, however, you’ll want to sign up for the feature online or over the phone. As other companies are taking away or throttling unlimited plans, it’s refreshing to see one that’s actually adding services to theirs. Full press release after the break.

Delta Airlines Breastfeeding Policy

Age of Empires Online Season Pass offers all and future available content for one price
Aug 17th
Now that the free-to-play Age of Empires Online MMORTS is out (and it’s not all bad, apparently), let’s start talking about how you can pay for it, shall we? Of course, the game is free to download, and you get the game’s two empires to play with right away. But developer Gas Powered Games are working on releasing new content all the time, of course, and Microsoft has announced at Gamescom that those really interested in the game will be able to pick up a “Season Pass” that will grant access to all premium content currently available. That pass will cost $99.99, and last for the first six months of the game.
At this point, we only know about a few different content packs, and there’s a deal for a free Defense of Crete Booster Pack when you buy both Premium Civs, so everything on the market right now will set you back only about $60. But keep in mind that the Season Pass lasts until February of next year, so everything Gas Powered releases before then is yours to keep. If you like the game a lot, that will probably be worth the deal.
One note of warning: Gas Powered also says that buying the Season Pass won’t keep you from rebuying content accidentally, so don’t forget and buy more stuff when your Christmas cards come in. But hopefully if you spend $100 on a free-to-play game, you won’t really be tempted to spend any more than that, right?

Boxee launches iPad app, new Box update, media server and bookmarklet today
Aug 10th
The long awaited Boxee for iPad app is finally ready to launch, and coming with it is a fresh update for the Boxee Box, plus new Media Manager software for your PC or Mac to make streaming locally stored files to the tablet or PC even easier. We got an early look at the iPad app (which lacks access to the Box’s apps) and while the interface had been lightly reworked since our last hands-on experience at CES it was very crash prone, with a tendency to close suddenly while streaming videos from YouTube or a connected PC. Boxee Box owners may not have to worry about that however, since the new v1.2 update adds AirPlay compatibility as an “experiment” for any online content (check after the break for the full list of changes). The Media Manager software on the PC makes it easier to organize content for playback on the tablet or Box, while a new Watch Later Bookmarklet also makes one-click sharing of online video from browser to device possible. All in all the idea is to make Boxee the “one place to discover, watch and share video” no matter where you are and we can see it getting there — once everything stays up and running consistently.

Chinese government to track users of free WiFi, small businesses react with service cutoffs
Jul 27th
Thought Google had a mountain-sized stack of your up close and personal online habits? Think again, because the omnipresent search king’s all-seeing eyes are nothing compared to the Chinese government, which recently enacted stricter regulations to identify free WiFi users. The government-issued monitoring software will cost the cafes and restaurants it targets $3,100, putting small business owners in a sticky situation — pay up, or shut down the free surfing. An informal survey conducted by the New York Times found not one owner willing to bow to the Republic’s pressure, citing the out-of-pocket cost and low number of actual users. It’s possible the move to clamp down on anonymous browsing was spurred by recent youth-embraced, social networking-backed uprisings, like the one in Cairo earlier this year. Seems a loophole in China’s net management policy allows “laptop- and iPad-owning colleges students and expatriates” — the very same group behind recent revolts — to go online undetected. It remains to be seen if the Communist Party will make this new measure widespread, or just restrict it to central Beijing. For their sake, we echo one owner’s hope that “official fervor [will]… soon die down.”

Fox restricts online streams of new TV shows to ‘authenticated’ pay TV subscribers
Jul 27th
Starting this fall, for the first eight days after they air, watching Fox TV shows online will require a subscription to Hulu Plus or a participating cable or satellite company. So far Dish Network is the first and only provider to sign up its customers for access to the new walled garden on Fox’s site but others looking to fill out their TV Everywhere lineups probably won’t be far behind. While pay-TV networks like ESPN with ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app and EPIX have already gone the “authentication” route, Fox is the first of the broadcast networks to do so. The new rules go into effect August 15th, then we’ll find out if Fox is driving cable cutters towards paying for TV, piracy, or just ignoring the latest episode of Glee altogether.

What do you love, asks Google with a new portal to its many web services
Jun 28th
Say hello to your new online friend, wdyl.com. An eagle-eyed TechCrunch tipster spotted this freshly launched Google portal, whose purpose it seems to be to gather up all of the company’s multifarious web services under one umbrella. A Google search for Google products, in other words. Punching in a topic brings up its popularity in Google Trends, lets you set up Google Alerts, plan related events in Google Calendar, email someone in Gmail, or hit up Picasa, YouTube or Google News with the same query. You get the picture. It hasn’t yet been made official and hitting up the site without the “www.” prefix throws up a bad URL error at the moment, but it’s there and seemingly fully functional. Give it a try and let us know which search terms bring up the most humorous results.

Free DSiWare Four Swords is the GBA version
Jun 15th
Last week during E3, Nintendo generously announced a free release of The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords for DSiWare, playable on both DSi/XL and 3DS. The company didn’t clarify, however, whether the game would be the original Four Swords multiplayer game that was packed in with A Link to the Past on GameBoy Advance, the GameCube Four Swords Adventures, or some combination of both.
Nintendo confirmed to Joystiq today that the game will in fact be the GBA multiplayer game that was included with LTTP. Clarifying further, we were told “This is separate from the GameCube version,” though it’s still unclear what updates, if any, will be made to the DSiWare version of Four Swords — we’d be shocked not to see some redone graphics, and how about some online multiplayer for good measure? It remains to be seen.
The free download will be here in September, according to Nintendo’s E3 presentation.

LulzSec attacks Escapist Magazine, EVE Online, and Minecraft
Jun 15th
Hacker group LulzSec, the same group that’s attacked Sony and Nintendo in the past, has tweeted that it’s committed three distributed denial of service attacks against gaming companies today, bringing down EVE Online‘s Tranquility server, Minecraft‘s multiplayer services, and the Escapist Magazine’s website. EVE Online‘s CCP has confirmed both the outage and the attack, the Escapist is unreachable at the moment, and Minecraft creator Notch says that things were down, but supposedly service has been restored.
LulzSec hasn’t shared a reason for the attacks just yet, but we can only guess it’s, as they say, “for teh lulz.”
Update: The group has gone after Riot Games’ League of Legends servers as well. Attempting to log in to the game gives a “server busy” message, though there’s no official word from the company yet.
Update: Statement from CCP after the break. EVE Online still seems to be down.

Anonymous Takes Down Turkish Government Site
Jun 12th
arisvega writes with word that the group of hackers known as Anonymous “has taken down a Turkish government website in a protest against recently introduced Internet filters that many consider to be censorship. They also appear to have published a manifesto. Turkey has a long history of Internet censorship, with the country’s ISPs having blocked YouTube and numerous other sites in the the past couple of years.”
From the linked manifesto: “(The Turkish government) has blocked thousands of websites and blogs while abusive legal proceedings against online journalists persist. The government now wants to impose a new filtering system on the 22nd of August that will make it possible to keep records of all the people’s internet activity. Though it remains opaque why and how the system will be put in place, it is clear that the government is taking censorship to the next level.”

Nintendo’s ‘goal’ for Mario Kart 3D: eight-player online
Jun 12th

Mario Kart 3D has more improvements in store than just hanggliders bolted to the backs of all the cars. It currently features eight-player local wireless racing, and, if everything goes as planned, it’ll feature eight-player online as well.
Joystiq asked Mario Kart 3D producer Hideki Konno if the kart racer would feature online play, and he responded “Of course!” Though the current online configuration isn’t quite set, “our goal right now is to have the same number of players for both local wireless and multiplayer over wi-fi.” The bottleneck at the moment is making sure the game can handle smooth 60FPS frame rate with eight players in both online and offline, 2D and 3D.

FitBot Lets You Try Clothes Before You Buy

mikejuk writes “There is one big problem with online shopping. You can’t actually try out the goods until they arrive. Servo motors are used to move sections of the body in and out to create different body shapes. It is very eerie and slightly disturbing to watch!”
