Picture Blocking Beer Cooler Keeps Your Face Out of Embarrassing Photos
Dec 16th
cylonlover writes “It may sound like something dreamed up by a cheesy men’s magazine as a joke, but apparently this is a real thing that actually exists. Ostensibly, the Norte Photoblocker is a functional beer cooler surrounded by four sensors that can detect the flashes from cameras or cell phones. If a flash goes off in the direction of the Photoblocker, it fires its own flash to flood the resulting photos with bright white and obscure anyone nearby. Now you can go about your usual business of cheating on your spouse, being an idiot around your boss, or drunkenly harassing fellow party-goers without worrying that some wildly irresponsible person will tag you in a photo and posts it online.”

Octodad 2 reaches funding goal with a day to spare
Aug 10th
The story of Octodad, a regular, caring father who just happens to have eight tentacles and immediately catastrophic coordination, is set to continue — thanks to you! The Octodad 2 Kickstarter initiative, set up by indie studio Young Horses, has exceeded its funding goal of $20,000. The endeavor has generated nearly $22,818 for the endearing parental cephalopod, with over 30 hours still left on the clock.
The majority of financial backers pledged $10 or more (earning them a pre-order, digital art and a mention in the credits), followed by a large group that offered upwards of $35 and earned an additional Octodad t-shirt and a copy of the game. One magnanimous person pledged over $1000 and gained access to a 22″ x 34″ framed oil painting of a nonchalant octopus pretending to be a gentleman.
Octodad 2 is currently intended for PC and Mac, though consoles and motion controls are being considered due to the high probability of ensuing hilarity.

Top Gamerscore(r) crosses 600,000
Aug 8th
You know, the word hero gets thrown around a lot, and in the process it’s lost some of its meaning. Some of its power. But we’re not sure the term has ever been more accurately applied than it is to Raymond Cox, whose record-breaking Gamerscore has just reached the milestone of 600,000. Cox crossed the last big hurdle — 500,000 — over nine months ago.
When does a meaningless number become instantly meaningful? The moment yours is higher than every other person on the planet. That’s when.

Defiance bringing MMO third-person shooting to PC, 360 and PS3
Jun 12th

For as many games as we physically play at E3, we hear as many ambitious, high-concept pitches for games that are still quite a ways out. One presentation at Trion Worlds for the upcoming Defiance is about as ambitious as they come. Ready? Deep breath:
Defiance is an MMORPG/third-person shooter set to launch simultaneously on PS3, PC and 360 that’s being created in conjunction with the SyFy network which will develop and launch a TV series of the same name, the events of which will bleed into the game and vice versa.
…Yeah, it’s a mouthful.

NYC’s last great arcade documented in ‘Arcade: The Last Night at Chinatown Fair’
May 10th
“Chinatown [Fair] was the last one, it had the best players, and this was like our last spot. So now hearing that this is closing, we gotta find another spot to migrate to,” one defeated-sounding patron of Chinatown Fair exclaims in the short clip from Arcade: The Last Night at Chinatown Fair. The documentary intends to capture the iconic New York City arcade’s last evening, and the ambitious project is being funded entirely by Kickstarter.
Rumors surrounding Chinatown Fair’s closing began in early February of this year. Though a brief glimmer of hope saw the owners renegotiating their lease, the 50+ year-old arcade eventually closed for good later that month.
As of mid-day on Monday, the project has raised over $13K, with a goal of $20K (and another 22 days left). The film’s production staff are also offering incentives for donation, with everything from a digital copy of the finished product and a credit in the film for just $10, to a “custom designed Chinatown Fair theme arcade cabinet” for pledges of $5,000 or more (One person already signed up! Madness!). Head past the break and see the full pitch video, as well as the premiere trailer.

Quirky App Of The Day: Pound It
May 9th
I will admit completely to my status as a complete social idiot in high school. I had little sense in the ways of flirtation, subtlety, or just basic humor and insight. I’m getting some dividends now that I write up reviews about apps that most people would have the maturity to just ignore, but other than that, I’m still just a dork. As Bill Engval so eloquently explains, I’m always just 15 degrees off cool.
However, I have my moments where I can tell that there’s something not quite right with the social picture. It’s akin to finding Waldo at Waldo’s funeral and realizing just as you’re opening your mouth that you probably shouldn’t yell, “Found him!” So, when even my social senses are tingling, I know that something is amiss, probably glaringly so to others.
Pound It did indeed send those little vibrations down my spine while I fiddled around with it. The point of the app is to give yourself a fist pound. The screen shows a fist, and you tap yours onto it. Then, you see an explosion and another fist pops up. That’s still considered to be somewhat geeky, right? I’m not getting a false reading, am I? This sort of sounds like giving myself a high-five. Believe me, I’ve had my fair share of being left hanging high and dry. So, I’m sensitive to whether or not I can go ahead and relieve the achy feeling in my hand where the contact of human skin should have been with a bit of my own.
I just can’t bring myself to believe that an app on the iPhone can fill the void. I’m sure the developer meant well. He even put in explosions after you touch the screen. It’s still a poor substitute for a human being. I don’t think it has nearly so much to do with having another person’s hand make contact with mine as it is having a person there to witness the event. If it were actually making physical contact, then I would be in poor shape because I miss all the time. Gauge by the elbow for a high-five, but I’m not sure what to gauge by for with a fist pound. If the developer figures out an app for that, I would gladly pay the $0.99 for the information. It would prevent humiliation.
Pound It is available at iTunes for $0.99

Incredible Look Inside the Magma Chamber of Iceland’s Thrihnukagigur Volcano
May 4th

It’s not everyday that a person gets to see a volcano in-person, much less go inside one. Believe it or not, “for the first time in history scientists have descended 650ft into the magma chamber of a volcano.” Click here for more pictures.
These incredible images show one explorer gently lowering himself into the heart of the dormant Thrihnukagigur volcano in Iceland. Known as a ‘sleeping volcano’ because it could come back to life at any time, Thrihnukagigur is credited with helping to create the Atlantic island we call Iceland when it last erupted 3,000 years ago.

Family Disaster???
Apr 11th
A Government shutdown could be a monumental disaster for my family. The picture shown is me with all of my grandchildren. EVERY one of these children is the child of either a US Soldier or a DOD employee. Their Grandpa (my husband) is DOD Civil Service, my daugher’s husband is a DOD Gov’t Contractor. My two oldest sons are Army and National Guard respectively. Literally the only person that would potentially still be receiving an income in this whole scenario would be myself. I can’t even fathom it…

A New Lease on (Fake) Life
Jan 18th
Odds are that if you were to assess your life in this very moment, you’re not where you want to be. And honestly, I kind of hope that’s true, because no one should hope to be sitting in front of a computer reading a blog post. But on a greater scale, the law of averages dictates that there are some things in life you’re just not happy with and you wish you could change. Maybe you’re too fat, maybe you regret never asking out that beautiful Brandon Summers in 8th grade, or maybe life in the International Society for Krishna Consciousness isn’t as glamorous as the pamphlets made it out to be. Take a second chance with Alter Ego!

Android Text Messages Intermittently Going Astray
Jan 3rd
theodp writes “Reports from Engadget and others suggest that Tiger Woods and Brett Favre might want to avoid Android for the time being. It seems Android’s default text messaging app still has horrible text messaging bugs that can that intermittently send texts to the wrong person. ‘This is ticking me off like no other technology glitch that I experienced in recent years,’ reads one unhappy camper’s post on a lengthy Help Forum thread opened on March 16th. ‘If a bank deposited my paycheck into another person’s account I wouldn’t stress so much cause I can always get the money back. How the hell do you take words back? “Oh sorry boss you had to find out that I think you’re an idiot, can I still keep my job, please please please?”‘ Over at Google Code, Issue 9392 — SMS are intermittently sent to wrong and seemingly random contact — carries a priority of ‘Medium,’ even though it has 600+ comments and has been starred by 3,600+ people.”

Kinect Hacks: First-person slipping
Dec 23rd
Full-body mapping isn’t new to Kinect — not even hacking it to control the MikuMikuDance is new. But this isn’t the apparent innovation put on display by a Kinect tinkerer known as “Nao_u.” The adventurous programmer combines Microsoft’s camera sensor with a pair of Vuzix VR920 LCD glasses, allowing a player to see through Miku’s eyes (projected in the VR920 head-mounted display), while controlling her in-game actions with body movements registered by Kinect. It’s total first-person VR — J-pop style — with a $400 add-on!
Feeling confident in his new body, Nao_u steps out onto a precariously placed i-beam (just where did that come from?). High above the sim city, he takes his first, wobbly steps. You can see where this is going (after the break) …

Mark Zuckerberg named Time Person of the Year, Jesse Eisenberg sadly not listed
Dec 15th
Sorry, everybody, you’re not Person of the Year in 2010. For the fourth time in a row someone other than you has won the honor, and this time it’s Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Why? Well, Time says it’s because his creation has “wired together a twelfth of humanity,” but we think a certain highly dramatized blockbuster movie might have something to do with it. Really, it’s not luck the Zuck did that much in 2010, except tell some uncomfortable stories when launching Seamless Messaging. Runners up include Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, who had another rough year, and Wikileaks’ Julian Assange, who is currently having a rather rough December after shaking up international relations all year long.
