New Last of Us art pieces hint at a world-ending disease
Dec 9th
You might have already guessed that Sony’s PS3 exclusive The Last of Us was probably about an apocalyptic virus of some kind, just by watching that video released last weekend. And these two new shots that have appeared on the official site don’t do much to prove you wrong: One shot shows a forest, with the view pointed up into the sun, and the second, above, pictures a ruined newspaper stand talking about the President addressing a broken nation as “millions more are feared dead or infected,” and quarantines breaking in New Mexico while martial law is declared in England.
In short, the world is packed nicely into a handbasket, with some sort of infectious disease filling out the customs-required shipping forms to a final destination of Hell. We’ve seen the world end lots of times before, but maybe The Last of Us has an artsy new spin on it. We’ll likely find out more this weekend at Saturday’s Spike Video Game awards, or as the site says, on 12/10/11. Get those surgical masks ready, people.

More Atari iOS Titles Are Expected As They Concentrate On Mobile and Casual Gaming
Aug 18th
Gamers with an iDevice should expect more Atari published games because the longtime gaming giant is now concentrating on the mobile and casual scene, according to Touch Arcade.
On top of this latest directional shift, the management at Atari is also undergoing some changes.
“Atari has added a new senior vice president of digital publishing, Owais Farooqui, and has pegged Maria Pacheco as its vice president of mobile. Farooqui was previously with a tournament games company, King.com. Pacheco, on the other hand, last served Vivendi Games Mobile, which apparently existed at one point,” Touch Arcade reports.
In case you were wondering what to expect from Atari in the future, check out their browser-based games like “Asteroids Online” and “Dark Orbit.” It would also be nice to get more classics added (via updates) to the “Atari’s Greatest Hits” app for iOS.
What is interesting about this latest news regarding Atari, is how it comes at a time when Nintendo is being criticized by investors for being a backward thinking company that just “does not get it.” You may recall that Atari used to be a hardware manufacturer like Nintendo is now.
Unlike Nintendo, Atari understands the current popularity of social, mobile, and browser based gaming. The once dethroned giant seems to have its head straight while the former king refuses to give in.

The Internet’s New Alternate Reality
May 3rd

Hugh Pickens writes “Tim Rutten writes in the LA Times that when President Obama released his long form birth certificate last week, one of the striking things about the reaction to the president’s calm and — to reasonable minds — entirely persuasive appearance in the White House briefing room Wednesday was the rapidity and ease with which so many leading birthers rejected the evidence he presented. ‘Until very recently, if every professional news organization in the nation examined a charge and found it baseless, it was — for all intents and purposes — dropped,’ writes Rutten. ‘Today, the growth of the Internet has drained the noun “news” of its former authority. If you don’t like the facts presented on the sites of established news organizations, you simply keep clicking until you find one whose “facts” accord with your beliefs.’”

An anonymous reader writes “Google recently wrote off concerns about its mobile devices sending precise user location data back to its servers, but recently uncovered emails illustrate that user location is instrumental in its strategy. Andy Rubin, Senior Vice President of Mobile at Google, wrote to Larry Page, founder and now CEO, explaining that location data from mobile phones was ‘extremely valuable to Google,’ especially given the privacy blow-up concerning its Street View cars at the time.”

Rumor: Starhawk reveal coming in mid-May (Us: Try to act surprised)
Apr 30th
Posted by admin in Games
We’ve been hearing about a rumored follow-up to Warhawk for nearly two years after Sony Computer Entertainment of America registered a trademark for a game known as “Starhawk.” And though the rumors have gone quiet for quite some time, SystemLink PlayStation claims to have spoken to an anonymous Sony employee who revealed a wealth of details about the alleged sequel — details that are reported to be part of a big reveal in mid-May.
Lightbox Interactive is said to be in the pilot’s seat — a studio made of ex-Incognito devs, the same folks who made Warhawk — and the game will be exclusive to the PlayStation 3. According to the report, the core gameplay doesn’t deviate too much from its predecessor — “a third-person shooter with jeeps, APCs, tanks, and now spaceships.” As for space combat, the piece claims that only some maps will allow spaceships to exit the planet’s atmosphere, with specific areas intended for ground combat. The game is also said to feature both single- and multiplayer, with a heavier focus on the latter. No details are provided as to whether it’s a digital or retail release (or some combination of both, like the original game).
As the piece points out, Lightbox Interactive president Dylan Jobe has been tweeting up a storm with his excitement, with such missives as “Been running in silent mode for too long. This is killing me. I can’t wait to be able to talk about it” and “Thank you all for your patience. Really! I want nothing more than to show off the new game to our fans!” For what it’s worth, an SCEA rep told us, “We don’t comment on rumors or speculation,” but we’ll hopefully find out what’s what in a few weeks.

University Proposes Tuition Based On Major
Apr 28th
Posted by admin in Gadget News
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has proposed “differential tuition,” a tuition structure that varies based on your major. An engineering major for example, would now pay considerably more than an English major. Liberal Arts majors would presumably get their education for free. From the article: “Charging different tuition rates for different courses of study is a growing trend among public research universities across the country. According to research by Glen Nelson, senior vice president of finance and administration for the Arizona Board of Regents, only five institutions used the practice for undergraduate students before 1988. As of this year, 57 percent of 162 public research institutions did so, including the University of Iowa and Iowa State University.”

Shocker! President Obama owns an iPad and computer, won’t have to borrow yours (video)

Barack Obama is quite likely the most computer literate president (which isn’t saying much) these united states have ever had. So it’s really no surprise to hear that the BlackBerry wielding prez also owns an iPad and, gasp, his own computer — except, perhaps, to Univision’s Jorge Ramos. Obama’s incredulous stare and jocular response to the questions are as hilarious as they are candid in their casual delivery. See for yourselves in the video after the break.
