An image acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) from NASA’s Aqua satellite on April 28, distinctly shows three tornado tracks in Tuscaloosa, Ala.” For those not following the news, a cluster of tornadoes and close-enough storms earlier this week caused the death of hundreds across several US states.

Verizon freezes Droid Charge launch indefinitely, blaming ‘unexpected delays’ (update: LTE back)
Apr 28th
Can’t say we’re surprised by this, but turns out Verizon’s decided to delay the launch of its Samsung Droid Charge — originally scheduled for today — at the very last minute. According to an internal email we obtained, the blame’s on “unexpected delays” and no new date has yet been set. This makes sense, considering it wouldn’t do Verizon much good to launch a new 4G Android when its LTE service is still down (for over 24 hours and still counting). Ah well, this 4.3-incher better be worth the wait.
[Thanks, Anonymous]
Update: We’re hearing reports that LTE is gradually being restored across the states, and our own Myriam Joire also sees 4G connection in San Francisco. That said, at this stage it’s unlikely that the Droid Charge will resume launch today.
Update 2: Official confirmation from Verizon that all is well. If your USB modem is having issues navigating between 3G and 4G, we’re told that will “continue to improve.”

TJX Hacker Claims US Authorized His Crimes
Apr 11th
doperative writes “Convicted hacker Albert Gonzalez is asking a federal judge to throw out his earlier guilty pleas and lift his record-breaking 20-year prison sentence, on allegations that the government authorized his years-long crime spree. From the article: ‘The government has acknowledged that Gonzalez was a key undercover Secret Service informant at the time of the breaches. Now, in a March 24 habeas corpus petition filed in the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts, Gonzalez asserts that the Secret Service authorized him to commit the crimes. “I still believe that I was acting on behalf of the United States Secret Service and that I was authorized and directed to engage in the conduct I committed as part of my assignment to gather intelligence and seek out international cyber criminals,” he wrote. “I now know and understand that I have been used as a scapegoat to cover someone’s mistakes.”’”

Visualized: Google charts the rise and fall of United States revenues
Mar 30th
Where would we be without Google? Well, we wouldn’t have pretty charts to gawk at, for starters! The Mountain View squad has pulled 10 years’ worth of fiscal data from the US Census Bureau and compiled it into some gorgeous, infinitely sortable, and re-organizable graphs. They inspire both our admiration and apprehension, as their lines illustrate most starkly the shrinkage that replaced US economic growth over the latter half of the last decade. We’ve only picked out a few of the big states here, but all 50 are in Google’s public database — why not hit the source link and check up on your local governors’ pecuniary (mis)management skills, eh?
