Analysis: What today’s Supreme Court decision means to us
Jun 28th
In 2005, California state legislature passed Assembly Bill 1179, a law penned by Democratic state senator Leland Yee which prohibited the sale of violent video games to minors. The law mandated the application of special stickers to titles deemed too violent, and slapped retail employees who sold those games to anyone under the age of 18 with a maximum $1,000 fine. The law was signed by then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, but was struck down by the United States District Court for the Northern District of California before it could be enforced.
Following an unsuccessful appeal of that decision in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, the law’s progenitors petitioned for a hearing in the United States Supreme Court. The petition was successful, the case was argued last November and, earlier today, seven of the nine Supreme Court Justices decided to uphold the decision of the lower courts: California Assembly Bill 1179 violates the First Amendment rights afforded to all forms of media in the United States.
This decision obviously doesn’t just affect Californian teenagers with a penchant for video games above their maturity level. It represents a vote of confidence in games and the non-governmental agency (see: The ESRB) which regulates their sale.

India wants to spy on Nokia users, BlackBerry fans no longer feel special
Apr 17th
Poor Nokia, between having to abandon its Symbian baby and hawk anachronistic wares at a Microsoft event, it’s had a pretty rough go of it recently. Now India’s Ministry of Home Affairs wants to block the launch of the company’s new push email service until a monitoring system can be put in place. According to The Economic Times, the Department of Telecommunications is being asked to hold back the service until the intelligence community has a way to spy on messages being sent. RIM recently fought a similar battle with the Indian government, as well as those in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Looks like the two companies share more in common than just their slip from the top of the smartphone heap.

Bing begins roll out of HTML5-enhanced search interface
Apr 11th

Bing’s new HTML5-and-CSS3-enhanced search interface, which was first demonstrated back in September 2010 to showcase the power of IE9, has started to roll out.
The most notable addition to the new interface is is smooth page transitions — the fade in and out — and navigation tabs (maps, images, videos, etc.) now persistently float at the top of the page. WinRumors is also reporting that a feature reminiscent of Google Instant search is being added to Bing, with page elements smoothly transitioning in and out as you type in your search query.
If you want to try out the new Bing UI, your best bet is to set your locale to United States – English and pray that you’re part of the initial roll out. Alternatively, just wait a few days until MIX 2011, Microsoft’s Web developer conference, which is when the new Bing UI should be officially launched.

Firefox 4 manages 7 million downloads in first 24 hours, still going strong
Mar 24th
In its first 24 hours of public availability, Firefox 4 was downloaded around 7 million times, beating out 3.5′s tally of 5 million, but falling short of Firefox 3′s monumental 8 million.
Mozilla’s new browser has maintained more than 4000 downloads per minute for the last 24 hours, peaking at around 9000 per minute in the late afternoon yesterday, when all of Europe and the Americas were awake. There was also a surge over night as Asia woke up, with huge download spikes caused by Japan and India. China, despite having the largest population of Internet surfers, has seen relatively slow uptake, and is currently third in Asia, some way behind India.
The United States registered the largest number of downloads in 24 hours, with about 1.5 million. Germany was second with around 600,000, which, considering Germany’s population of 82 million, also represents the most Firefox downloads per capita. The U.K. has seen fairly poor adoption of the browser, registering just 235,000 downloads in the first 24 hours.

Muslims, Supporters Rally Against Congress Hearings
Mar 8th
On Sunday, March 6, 2011. hundreds of Muslims and their supporters gathered near Times Square in New York City to protest upcoming congressional hearings on the role of Muslims in homegrown terrorism and radicalization amongst members of that religion in the U.S.
The rally was organized by a group of inter-faith, citizen and government organizations in response to the hearings headed by US Congressman Peter King from New York, being condemned by some as leading to racial profiling of Muslims.
King is the Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee.
He has said that “he sees an international movement with elements in the United States of Muslims becoming more radical and identifying with terrorists”.
Opponents see the hearings as a “demonizing of American Muslims.”
The rally, held under sometimes torrential rain. included a multi-religious, multi-racial representations, with sings proclaiming “Today I am a Muslim too”, some held by Jews, one by a gay couple.
A priest carried a sign that read: “Who would Jesus persecute? Islam is not my enemy.”
